2027 will be an especially exciting year for pilgrims! It will be an Año Xacobeo, also known as a Holy Year or Jubilee Year, when pilgrims from around the world come together to experience the Camino de Santiago.
Throughout the Holy Year, Santiago de Compostela and the Camino come alive with cultural events, celebrations, and festivals. It is the perfect opportunity to step away from everyday life, reconnect with nature, discover Spain at a slower pace, and enjoy a truly meaningful journey.
Xacobeo 2027: Everything you need to know
St. James the Apostle, known as Santiago in Spanish, is the patron saint of Spain and the Camino de Santiago. According to tradition, his remains are buried beneath the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, which has attracted pilgrims from around the world for centuries.
A Xacobeo Year is celebrated when the Feast of St. James, on July 25, falls on a Sunday. This happens approximately every six years, although the intervals vary because of leap years. The most recent Holy Year was in 2021, making 2027 the next opportunity to experience the Camino during a Jubilee Year.
One of the most important traditions of the Holy Year is the opening of the Holy Door of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Pilgrims who complete the traditional requirements of the pilgrimage during a Holy Year may also obtain the plenary indulgence, traditionally known as receiving the Jubilee.
Planning your Camino de Santiago in 2027
The number of pilgrims travelling to Santiago increases significantly during Xacobeo Years, making 2027 a particularly special time to experience the Camino. It is a wonderful opportunity to share the journey with fellow pilgrims, meet people from around the world, and experience the unique atmosphere that surrounds the Holy Year.
However, increased demand also means that accommodation and other services on the most popular Camino routes can become limited, particularly during the summer months. For this reason, we strongly recommend planning and booking your trip well in advance.
One of the advantages of travelling with Bike Spain Tours is that we take care of all the logistics for you. From carefully selected accommodation and daily luggage transfers to bike rental, route planning, and support, we make sure that everything is in place so you can simply enjoy the ride.
We also offer guided luxury Camino cycling tours, combining the adventure of cycling the Camino with comfortable accommodation, excellent local cuisine, and personalized service.
Which Route to Choose for Xacobeo 2027
The Xacobeo Holy Year is a fantastic opportunity to experience the Camino by bike — and, if you are looking for a quieter alternative to the busiest sections, there are plenty of ways to get off the beaten path.
The Camino Francés, or French Way, is the classic Camino route and an all-time favorite among pilgrims.
Starting in León or Burgos, you will cycle across the vast plains of Castilla y León before entering the lush green landscapes of Galicia. Along the way, you will discover historic towns, charming villages, ancient pilgrimage routes, and some of the most iconic landscapes of the Camino.
It is one of our signature Camino cycling experiences, and for good reason — you really can’t go wrong with the French Way!
The Camino Portugués, or Portuguese Way, offers the chance to experience two countries in one unforgettable journey.
Starting in Porto, you can cycle north through Portugal before crossing into Galicia and continuing towards Santiago de Compostela. Depending on your chosen itinerary, the route can follow the beautiful Atlantic coastline or take you inland through picturesque countryside and historic towns.
The Portuguese Way is an excellent choice for cyclists looking for a slightly different Camino experience, combining Portuguese and Spanish culture, beautiful scenery, excellent food, and the unmistakable spirit of the Camino.
