Gastronomy

The Basque Country is a paradise for food lovers, celebrated for its fresh seafood, crisp txakoli wines, and vibrant pintxo culture. Coastal towns serve up the day’s catch in traditional taverns, while modern restaurants push the boundaries of innovative cuisine. From grilled fish in charming fishing ports to gourmet creations in Michelin-starred eateries, every meal is a taste of the region’s rich culinary heritage. Sampling the local flavors is an intrinsic part of the Basque culinary experience.

Wines

The Basque Coast and surrounding regions are renowned for their distinctive wines, particularly the crisp, slightly sparkling white txakoli, produced in small coastal vineyards. These wines are light, refreshing, and perfectly paired with the region’s abundant seafood. Inland, the Rioja Alavesa region offers elegant red wines with rich, complex flavors, reflecting centuries of winemaking tradition. Tasting these local wines provides a true connection to the culture and terroir of the Basque Country.

Accomodation upgrade: Hotel Maria Cristina

Welcome to your fabulous gravel bike tour of the Basque Country!

Enjoy an afternoon at leisure exploring the city centre and the spectacular shell-shaped beach of La Concha. Why not carb-load ahead of your cycling adventure by trying some of San Sebastian’s world-famous pintxos, accompanied by a glass of local txakoli white wine?

Day 2: San Sebastian – Leitza

Route: 45km/27.8 miles Elevation: 710m/ 2330 feet

Accomodation: Rural Hotel Lopenea

Meals included: Breakfast

This morning our local partner, Miguel, will meet you in the lobby of your hotel. He will be there to fit your bikes and give you the maps and documents you need for the week and answer any questions.

Next, its time to start your Basque gravel bike tour!

This first leg of your journey flows out of the city and along the banks of the Urumea River, sweeping you through the heart of Basque cider country in Astigarraga before reaching Andoain. From there, prepare for one of Northern Spain’s most captivating Vías Verdes—a former railway line transformed into a gravel paradise that winds through deep, emerald valleys and a rhythmic series of light-filled tunnels.

The ride from Andoain to Leitza is a steady, gentle ascent through a wild and secluded landscape where the only soundtrack is the local wildlife. Because this stretch is beautifully remote with no services along the way, we recommend enjoying a long lunch in Andoain or packing a picnic to enjoy en route before you reach the welcoming stone streets of Leitza.

Day 3: Leitza to Ulzama

Route: 50km/32miles Elevation: 700m/2300 feet

Accomodation: Hotel Mirador Ulzama

Meals included: Breakfast, Dinner

This stage continues your journey along the Plazaola Greenway toward Lekunberri, navigating a moderate, steady ascent through a series of historic railway tunnels. Upon reaching the town, you’ll transition onto the Plazaola Natural Path, which traces the Larraun River beneath a lush canopy of native beech and oak forests.

The route winds through the serene Basaburua Valley, connecting a string of sleepy villages via wide paths and quiet secondary roads with virtually no traffic. It is a ride of pure mountain air and pastoral beauty, culminating in a well-earned stay at the elegant Hotel & Spa El Mirador de Ulzama, where you can relax and soak in the panoramic views of the valley whilst enjoying the included dinner.

Day 4: Ulzama to Elgorriaga

Route: 40km/26mi Elevation: +600 m/ 1975 feet

Accomodation: Balneario Elgorriaga

Meals included: Breakfast, Dinner

Prepare yourself for the most technically demanding and exhilarating stage of the journey!

Leaving the hotel, you’ll immediately begin your ascent via a quiet secondary road toward the village of Orokieta. The real challenge begins a few kilometers later as you veer onto a rugged mountain track; here, you will climb toward the peaks for a rewarding bird’s-eye view before plunging into a technical, and gorgeous, descent toward the mystical Leurtza Reservoirs. From the water’s edge, a paved descent carries you down into Donamaria. The final stretch levels out as you cruise through Santesteban, eventually arriving in Elgorriaga for a well-deserved recovery at your hotel. A visit to the spa is included as well as dinner!

Day 5: Elgorriaga– Hondarribia

Route: 49 km/27.2 miles Elevation: +400m/ 1310 feet

Accomodation: Hotel Jauregui

Accomodation upgrade: Parador de Hondarribia

Meals included: Breakfast

Today’s gravel bike stage follows the brand-new Bidasoa vía verde cycle path along the river of the same name. Enjoy a relaxed downhill ride through picturesque Navarrese villages, all the way to the border town of Hendaye. Here, you’ll take a boat across the bay and into France, where you’ll spend the night in the colourful fortified town of Hondarribia.

Day 6: Hondarribia – San Sebastian

Route: 31 km/ 19.3 miles Elevation: +530 m/ 1740 feet

Accomodation: Hotel Codina

Accomodation upgrade: Hotel Maria Cristina

Meals included: Breakfast

Your last ride of the week starts with a beautiful coastal ride along a seafront bike path, admiring historic lighthouses. From here, you’ll head up to Jaizkibel Mountain pass for stunning panoramic sea views, before enjoying a sweeping descent into the charming fishing village of Pasajes de San Juan. After a quick stop for coffee and a pintxo, you’ll take the boat across the bay to follow a bike path all the way into San Sebastian.
