On our Empordà cycling tour, you’ll explore the fabulous landscapes of one of the oldest wine-producing regions in the world.

Thanks to the Mediterranean climate and fertile soil, the foothills of the mountains surrounding the plain are the perfect terrain for growing grapes and olives. The region has been famous for its gastronomy and wine since Classical times, when the Greeks and Romans came for the strategic coastal location, and stayed for the fantastic farming conditions!

In 2005 influential wine guru Robert Parker put the Empordà on the world wine-producing map. Thanks to the hard work of the local wineries, the Empordà has been awarded Protected Designation of Origin status. On your Empordà cycling tour, you’ll be visiting one of the region’s very best wine cellars!

This is an easy tour for regular cyclists, which combines beautiful mountain views with the rugged coastline of the Costa Brava. You’ll be cycling along a mixture of small, quiet roads and well-kept dirt paths. Stages are an average of 40km in duration, without any major climbs.

The tour includes a guided visit to a local wine cellar, with a wine tasting and a picnic of local products.
  • Cycle through one of the most beautiful landscapes of Catalonia: l’Empordà.
  • Enjoy a guided visit to a local winery to try Protected Designation of Origin Empordà wine, plus a delicious picnic of regional products.
  • Visit local markets for an authentic experience of the gastronomy of the Empordà.
  • Discover history of the region’s gastronomy with visits to local museums dedicated to fishing, cork manufacturing and anchovy production.
  • Admire the surrealist art of the genius Salvador Dalí, born in Figueres.
  • Complete your foodie experience with an optional degustation dinner at a Michelin-star restaurant (please note that this will incur an additional cost of 165€).

Gastronomy

The Empordà and the Costa Brava boast a deeply rooted mar i muntanya (sea and mountain) culinary tradition, where seafood like gambes de Palamós, anchovies from L’Escala, and suquet de peix meet inland specialties such as duck with figs, butifarra with beans, and arroz de Pals. The region celebrates seasonal, local produce—from calçots and tomatoes to wild mushrooms—and is also known for artisanal cheeses, olive oil from the Empordà plains, and traditional sweets like crema catalana.

Wines

With its own Protected Designation of Origin status, the Empordà is the heart of Catalan wine culture. The windswept terrain produces expressive Garnatxa and Carinyena wines that range from elegant reds and aromatic whites to the region’s signature Garnatxa de l’Empordà sweet wine. A new wave of artisanal wineries blends centuries-old tradition with innovation, crafting fresh rosés, experimental natural wines, and bottles that capture the Tramuntana’s mineral, Mediterranean character.

10/10 - our whole group is ready to go again! All hotels were great, as were most restaurants. Bikes were all in great shape. Biking down into Cadaques should be on everyone's bucket list.
