Portugal by bike: Alentejo wine country tour

Our Bike Spain Tours team will meet you in Lisbon and transfer you to the charming Hotel Vila Galé Alter Real, a refined retreat that blends modern comfort with classic Alentejo elegance. Upon arrival, we’ll fit your bikes to ensure a perfect ride before embarking on our first cycling adventure.

We’ll pedal through gently rolling landscapes toward the medieval city of Castelo de Vide, then continue up to the hilltop fortified village of Marvão. Here, you can wander narrow cobbled streets, explore the 9th-century castle and ancient cistern, and take in breathtaking views of the Serra de São Mamede mountains. Mid-ride, we’ll enjoy a leisurely lunch in this dramatic setting, savoring the flavors of the region.

After lunch, we’ll cycle back to Crato along quiet, picturesque backroads, passing rolling hills and traditional Alentejo villages that provide a serene and scenic backdrop for our ride.

Our bike destination for today is the fortified medieval town of Estremoz, where you can wander cobbled streets and historic squares before enjoying a leisurely lunch in the heart of town. From there, we’ll continue to Vila Viçosa, the marble capital of Portugal, famous for its grand palaces, stately squares, and buildings crafted from the region’s distinctive white and pink stone.

At the end of the day, you’ll check in to the exquisite Alentejo Marmoris Hotel, a luxurious retreat where contemporary comfort meets the timeless elegance of Alentejo. Relax in beautifully appointed rooms, take in the serene surroundings, and toast the day with a glass of fine regional wine as the sun sets over the rolling hills. Dinner is included tonight, at the hotel.

After our visit, we’ll continue cycling to the castle of Juromenha. Perched dramatically above the Guadiana River, which forms the natural border between Portugal and Spain, the castle offers breathtaking panoramic views of the river valley—a perfect spot to pause and capture photos. From there, we’ll board a van for the transfer back to the hotel, completing the day’s adventure. Dinner is not included.

After lunch, you’ll be taken to the exquisite Convento do Espinheiro, a luxurious 5-star retreat set within a beautifully restored 15th-century convent. Surrounded by serene landscaped gardens and steeped in history, the property offers a refined blend of elegance and comfort. Relax by the pool, indulge in the hotel’s world-class spa, or toast the evening with a glass of Alentejo wine in this unique and magical setting.

For lunch, we’ll stop at an exceptional local winery to enjoy a leisurely meal paired with some of the region’s finest wines, a true celebration of Alentejo’s flavors. Afterward, we’ll return to the hotel for a bit of time to relax and shower. Then, in the late afternoon, we’ll head down to Evora to explore its charming streets, browse local artisan shops, or discover the city’s remarkable monuments such as the Capela dos Ossos — the haunting yet fascinating Bone Church!

Dinner is included in the center of Evora.
