On this guided bike tour, you’ll be one of the few visitors exploring the Alentejo wine region, one of the best in Portugal, discovering magical white villages, medieval castles and endless vineyards.
Enjoy a week of biking through these peaceful rolling hills whilst exploring local wine cellars, sleeping in convents and discovering the UNESCO world heritage sites of cities like Évora, Elvas, Vila Viçosa and Monsaraz.
Discover the amazing history, culture and traditions this blooming wine region has to offer especially since it garnered the Best Wine Region of the world in 2014. Alentejo is a picturesque and charming place, where you’ll fall in love with the whitewashed villages, medieval castles, sunbathed plains and the traditions and lifestyle. Visit the UNESCO world heritage sites in Évora, the fortified village of Marvão, the former Palace of the Portuguese Kings and the rural lifestyle of the local homesteads.
Ride the never-ending rolling hills and the hidden trails between the fields. The (practically) car-free roads and trails of the Alentejo provide a great atmosphere for bike tours and its topography makes it a great region for beginner and intermediate riders. You’ll have plenty of time to stop and check out the “Sobreiros” and visit the “Antas” along the way.

Day 1: Bike tour in Alentejo – Alter Chao – Castelo de Vide – Marvão

Welcome to Portugal, and your bike tour of the Alentejo wine region!
Pick up from the airport, or Lisbon, and after a 2 1/2 hour transfer to hotel Vila Gale Alter Real. Upon arrival, we will do the bike-fitting and start pedaling towards the medieval city and stronghold of Castelo de Vide, for a quick stop and coffee to gather forces to ride up to the top of the Marvão fortified village. You can walk through its narrow streets, visit the 9th century castle and cistern, and admire the beautiful S. Mamede mountain range before a mid-ride stop for lunch. After lunch, we’ll ride back to Crato winding through the small roads in the Beirã region. Relax at the hotel in the afternoon.
Day 2: Bike tour in Alentejo: Alter do Chão – Estremoz – Vila Vicosa

The best way to start a day is with a fine breakfast, at the hotel, before heading off to explore more beautiful villages and countryside! The biking will start in Alter do Chão, where we will pedal around the rolling hills of North Alentejo to the top of yet another medieval village: Estremoz, where we will have lunch. Afterwards, we’ll continue towards the marble capital of Portugal, the town of Vila Vicosa. Enjoy your afternoon visiting the town or relaxing at this charming hotel.
Day 3: Bike tour in Alentejo: Vila Viçosa – Elvas
Route: from 40 to 80 km
Accommodation: Alentejo Marmoris
Another day, another breakfast! Today our bike tour will begin at the Garrison Border Town of Elvas which is a UNESCO world heritage site. After a short visit we will continue onwards to the castle of Juromenha, located on the banks of the Guadiana River which serves as a natural border to Spain.
Day 4: Bike tour in Alentejo: Monsaraz – Mourão – Herdade do Esporão – Évora
Route: from 40 to 110 km
Accommodation: Convento Espinheiro
After another hotel breakfast we will begin today’s tour heading towards Monsaraz, where we’ll be able to have a privileged look at the enormous Alqueva Reservoir. After lunch, you’ll be transferred to Évora to check in to the Convento Espinheiro, an idyllic 5-star hotel.
Day 5: Bike tour in Alentejo: Évora – Arraiolos – Évora
Route: from 0 to 50km
Accommodation: Convento Espinheiro

Breakfast at the hotel. At the beginning of today’s optional circular route our first stop will be at an impressive white-washed fortification just on the outskirts of Évora. This spot is famous for it’s woolen carpets with intricate, traditional motifs. Ride by the central plains enjoying the views of the cork and olive trees; keep an eye out for the bulls and cattle which roam free in the big properties of the region, called Herdades. We will enjoy our last fine lunch in a superb winery before returning to Évora. You’ll have the last afternoon free for shopping in Évora and exploring its amazing monuments.
Day 6: Lisbon

It’s time to say goodbye to Portugal, as your bike and wine tour of the Alentejo comes to an end.
