Overview

Discover Lanzarote, land of the volcanoes, on our self-guided bike tour of one of the most unique cycling destinations in Europe!

Our itinerary covers the whole island from top to bottom, giving you the chance to discover Lanzarote’s true diversity. From the peaceful “valley of a thousand palm trees” in the north of the island, to the volcanoes of  Timanfaya National Park, to the beautiful southern coast, there’s something for everyone!

The unique appearance of Lanzarote is due to a fascinating combination of factors. The island suffered a series of volcanic eruptions in the 18th century, and as a result much of its surface was covered by lava flows. Enter local architect César Manrique, who took inspiration from Lanzarote’s volcanic landscapes and designed many of the island’s fantastical buildings and sculputures.

Lanzarote is a famous winter sun destination, and with good reason: with over 300 days of sun per year, and pleasant temperatures year-round, the island is an ideal cycling destination any month of the year.

Highlights

  • Pedal through the spectacular lunar-like volcanic landscapes of Lanzarote.
  • Explore Timanfaya National Park, the island’s volcanic centre, and visit a volcano-powered restaurant!
  • Relax in the picturesque village of Haría, set in the “valley of a thousand palm trees”.
  • Marvel at the volcanic vineyards in the unique wine region of La Geria.
  • Enjoy fantastic fresh seafood.

In the morning, you’ll have your bike fitting and welcome briefing, before setting off on your first cycling route!

The route takes you over the foothills of the spectacular Montaña de Tinaguache and through the town of Guatiza, where you can visit the impressive Jardín del Cactus, César Manrique’s last great work on the island.

Next, you will follow the coastline through picturesque fishing villages until you reach Jameos del Agua , a lava tunnel converted into an auditorium by César Manrique. Nearby, you can visit the Cueva de los Verdes, a remarkable lava cave once used by local townsfolk as a refuge from Berber pirates, before finishing your ride in the picturesque village of Haría.

Optionally, you can extend your route by some 20km/12 miles up to to the north coast of Lanzarote, to admire the salt flats of the small town of Orzola, before around the extinct volcano of La Corona, and up to the spectacular Mirador del Río.

Today, you can choose between a shorter route, allowing more time to explore Teguise, the charming former capital of Lanzarote, or take a longer route through Tahíche and Montaña Blanca.

From here, you can enjoy spectacular views of the volcanoes of Timanfaya, and in the distance the island of Fuerteventura. From here, a long descent takes you into the the pretty village of Teguise.

From Teguise, it’s an easy downhill route to San Bartolomé.

Optionally, you can extend your route by some 20km/12 miles to visit the LagOmar Museum, a spectacular house built around a lava quarry and using wood salvaged from shipwrecks found off the coast of Lanzarote;Fundación César Manrique, a house was built around a lava coulee, comprised of five natural volcanic bubbles, connected by tunnels excavated into the lava; and Bodega El Grifo, an innovative winery set in a lava field and which boasts its own museum.

The cycle route takes you through the lunar lanscapes of the volcanic badlands to the small hermitage of the Virgen de los Dolores (also known as Our Lady of the Volcanoes). This Virgin is said to have played a miraculous role in the eruptions of 1730-36 and 1824.

Just beyond the hermitage, you’ll pass by the volcanic crater of Guiguan, now used to cultivate crops and boasting its very own bodega.

Next, you’ll enjoy a long descent into the surfer paradise of La Santa and into the desert-like landscape of El Jable, with views of a volcanic chain to your left.

From here, it’s a steady and easy climb back to San Bartolomé.

Day 5: Playa Blanca

Today’s route takes you out of San Bartolomé and towards the island’s main attraction, the Parque Nacional de Timanfaya. This is where Lanzarote’s volcanic nature is at its most spectacular. The eruptions of 1730 – 1736 buried around a quarter of the whole island, including several villages, and gave rise to the impressive lava landscapes that we see today. Don’t miss El Diablo restaurant  whose kitchen is powered by volcanic heat!

From Timanfaya, you’ll head down to the south of the island, and the seaside village of Playa Blanca.

Optionally, you can extend the tour by 10km/6 miles to visit the unique seaside volcanic crater of El Golfo, where you’ll find a bright green natural pool surrounded by black sand known as El Charco de los Clicos. Pass by the colourful Janubio salt flats and the bright green Laguna de Janubio before finishing your ride in Playa Blanca.

Today, you can cycle to the unspoilt beaches of Papagayo, considered to be the best in Lanzarote; enjoy a relaxed bike tour with a stop for a seafood lunch at El Golfo, or take your bikes on the ferry across to Corralejo in Fuerteventura and discover another island.

Day 7: Arrecife
Route: 49.6 km/30.8 miles
Elevation: +724 m/2374 ft

Accommodation: Gran Hotel Arrecife

From Playa Blanca, you’ll head across the dramatic hills of Femés before heading to the wine country of La Geria, where successive volcanic eruptions have created a fertile plain, perfect for growing grapevines. The lava vineyard cultivation in La Geria has created a fascinating landscape that is unique in the world, as well as producing some excellent wines. If you’d like to sample some of the local vintage, we recommend a stop at Bodega la Geria, Bodega Rubicón or El Chupadero wine and tapas bar, which offers fabulous views over the volcanic vineyards.

From here, you’ll descend to the coast, and enjoy a pleasant seafront ride from Puerto del Carmen to Arrecife.

We made it around the Island on a bike in our 70’s!

Bike Spain did a great job in coordinating the logistics – pickup and drop off at the airport was timely, luggage was always at the next site when we arrived, the lodging options were all first rate, and the route on paper and GPS was good. Bike Spain was very responsive to all our questions in the planning process. We also appreciated all the special gifts – phone case, handlebar case, t-shirt, tote bag, water bottle were put to use, and will continue to be used! Really, it was the people we interacted with along the way along with the perfect bikes– they were brand new with strong motors and big batteries! : Bike Spain did a great job in coordinating the logistics – pickup and drop off at the airport was timely, luggage was always at the next site when we arrived, the lodging options were all first rate, and the route on paper and GPS was good..
