Overview

Our guided Camino de Santiago bike tour from Porto (Portugal) showcases the very best of the ancient Portuguese Way. Breathtaking coastal paths, historic cities, ancient Roman roads and no fewer than three separate wine regions combine to create a fabulous bike tour filled with gastronomy, culture and fabulous scenery!

Starting in the UNESCO World Heritage city of Porto, you’ll cycle through the vinho verde wine region and stay at a beautiful winery hotel in Ponte de Lima, one of Portugal’s most charming and historic towns. From here, you’ll ride along ancient Roman roads and through the forests and vineyards of inland Portugal all the way to the coast, where you’ll enjoy a beautiful cycle route along the wild Atlantic Coast.

From here, your Camino de Santiago bike tour takes you from Portugal across the border into Spain, where you’ll explore the atmospheric seaside town of Baiona, originally built as a fortification to fend off pirate attacks! You’ll enjoy a private boat trip to the Cíes Islands, a protected Nature Reserve known as the “Galician Caribbean” thanks to their pristine white sand beaches, before cycling through the beautiful Rías Baixas wine region and finishing your bike tour in the majestic city of Santiago de Compostela.

  • Discover the colourful UNESCO World Heritage Site of Porto.
  • Pedal the wild Atlantic coast of Portugal, and discover the centenarian forests and endless vineyard of the country’s interior.

Itinerary

Day 1: Porto
Arrival day
Accommodation: Hotel Eurostars das Artes
Meals included: Dinner

Welcome to your guided Camino bike tour through Portugal and Spain!

Arrival at leisure in Porto, the second biggest and most populated city in Portugal, just after Lisbon.

Porto has a range of flight connections with major international airports; alternatively, it is easily accessible from Lisbon by train. Ask your Bike Spain Tours travel consultant for assistance if required.

In Porto, you can visit attractions such as the Cathedral, the Tower “de los Clérigos”, Church do Carmo, Plaza de la Libertad and, of course, take a walk along the Douro River. We also recommend a visit to the beautiful Lello Bookshop, said to have inspired JK Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series.

Our tour begins with a meeting with your Bike Spain Tours guide at the hotel, where we’ll carry out the bike fitting and welcome briefing. In the evening, we’ll celebrate the start of our guided bike tour with a delicious dinner together at a local restaurant.

Day 2: Porto – Ponte de Lima
Route: 46km/28.6 miles
Elevation: +656m/+2153ft
Accommodation: Paço Vitorino
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

After breakfast, we’ll travel by van out of Porto to the town of Barcelos. Barcelos is the departure point of today’s cycle route, and from here we will pedal along the inland Portuguese Camino route towards Ponte de Lima. We’ll enjoy a pleasant ride through the bucolic Portuguese countryside, pedalling past the vineyards of the vinho verde wine region.

Ponte de Lima is one of the prettiest and most charming towns in Portugal. This village is located to the south of Lima river and it has been the main crossing point ever since the Romans built a bridge back in the year 1 B.C.

Tonight, we will be staying at the beautiful hotel Paço Vitorino, a manor house and functioning winery dating back to the 16th century. The hotel is surrounded vineyards and lush forest, and  we can enjoy a dip in the pool and a visit to the winery. We’ll enjoy a delicous dinner of traditional local fare, accompanied by local vinho verde, at the hotel’s very own restaurant.

Day 3: Ponte de Lima – Viana do Castelo
Route: 59.6km/37.1 miles
Elevation: +743m/+2439ft
Accommodation: Paço Vitorino
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch

Tooday’s cycle route takes us along the River Lima to Ponte da Barca, a fairytale village in a stunning natural setting, whose star attraction is the well-preserved medieval bridge. The town has long been connected with the Camino de Santiago; in fact, its name refers to the barca (small boat) that once ferried pilgrims across the River Lima, before the construction of the bridge in the 14th century.

In the afternoon, we’ll visit Viana do Castelo, a picturesque former port town set on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean.

Dinner tonight is not included, so you have some free time to explore the beautiful town of Viana do Castelo. We highly recommend trying some Portuguese bacalau (cod) at one of the excellent local restaurants!

Day 4: Viana do Castelo – Baiona
Route: 61.9km/38.5 miles
Elevation: +492m/+1614 ft
Accommodation: Parador de Baiona
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Today we’ll enjoy fabulous views as we continue to follow the coastline north, passing by ancient monasteries on the way to the pretty fishing village of Vila Praia de Âncora and the medieval border town of Caminha.

In Caminha, you’ll take a boat across the River Miño, leaving Portugal behind to continue your Camino bike tour in Spain, in the charming fishing village of A Guarda!

From A Guarda, we’ll follow a coastal cycle path along one of the wilder portions of Spain’s Atlantic coast. Along the way, we’ll pass by the beautiful beachfront Monastery de Santa María de Oia, which dates back to the 12th century.

Once in Baiona, we can spend some time exploring the city’s atmospheric historic centre and quaint fishing port. The town’s most important historic building is the Castelo de Monterreal, a medieval fortress that still retains the cannons once used to defend the town from pirates, and which offers fabulous views over the bay from the parapet. Nowadays, it is a luxury hotel; our hotel for the night, in fact!

We’ll enjoy a delicious dinner together at the hotel, watching the sun set into the Atlantic Ocean.

Day 5: Baiona
Accommodation: Parador de Baiona
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Daytrip to Cies Islands National Park

Today, we’ll enjoy a boat trip to the beautiful Cies Islands, often called the “Galician Caribbean” due to their pristine white sand beaches. These islands, a refuge for pirates back in the day, are currently an uninhabited paradise. There are no cars, no hotels, and the number of visitors each day is restricted.

A lunch of traditional Galician fare will be served on board the boat.

In the evening, we’ll explore the tapas bars around Baiona’s popular port area for a delicious dinner of fresh sefood.

Day 6: Santiago de Compostela
Route: 49.2km/30.6 miles
Elevation: +481m/+1577ft
Accommodation: Parador de Santiago
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

The final day of our Portuguese Camino explores the “spiritual variant” of the Camino, which follows the Translatio: the legendary route taken by the remains of Saint James to the city of Santiago de Compostela. Along the way, we’ll also discover the Rías Baixas wine region, home to albariño wine, which has Protected Denomination of Origin status.

Our day begins with a transfer to the spectacular Monastery of Armenteira, a beautifully-preserved 12th century Cistercian abbey. From here, we’ll enjoy a beautiful cycling route through the forests and vineyards of the Rías Baixas, before cycling over the bridge for a spin around the beautiful Illa de Arousa.

Our ffinal route finishes at a charming local winery, set in a historic Galician pazo (manor house), where we will enjoy a delicious lunch, paired with local albariño wine. After lunch, we’ll travel by van to the Parador de Santiago de Compostela, where we will share our experiences and joy with fellow pilgrims in Plaza Obradoiro.

In the evening, we’ll enjoy a final dinner as a group at a local restaurant.

Day 7: Santiago de Compostela
Departure day
Meals included: Breakfast

After breakfast, our guided Camino bike tour from Portugal to Spain comes to an end.

Santiago de Compostela has its own airport, and is well-connected with destinations within Spain and in other European countries. Connections by high-speed train are also available (via local train to Ourense). If you require any assistance with your onward travels, please contact our Bike Spain Tours team.

OPTIONAL EXTENSION: As the most important city in Christian medieval Spain, Santiago de Compostela is well worth taking an extra day to explore. Alternatively, we recommend a trip to the “end of the world”: the spectacular Finisterre peninsula. The western-most point in Spain, Finisterre is the traditional end of the Camino de Santiago, where pilgrims would traditionally burn old clothes and cast the ashes into the ocean as a symbol of their purification after their journey.
